What is Claude Enterprise
Why the tier distinction matters
When your organisation decides to adopt Claude, the first decision is not which department gets it — it is which product tier fits your needs, risk posture and budget. Getting this wrong costs time: buying Team when you need Enterprise means re-contracting, re-migrating settings and re-training administrators. Understanding the tier landscape upfront avoids that.
Anthropic currently offers four main tiers of claude.ai access: Free, Pro, Team and Enterprise. Each tier is additive — every higher tier includes everything below it and layers on additional controls, capacity or contractual terms.
The four tiers explained
Free
The Free tier is for individuals exploring Claude's capabilities. There is no charge, but usage is subject to rate limits that become restrictive under sustained professional use. Conversations may be used to improve Anthropic's models unless the user opts out in settings. There is no admin console, no shared workspace and no ability to enforce organisational policies. The Free tier is appropriate for personal experimentation, not business use.
Pro
Pro is an individual subscription (typically around USD 20 per month per person as of 2025). It removes the most aggressive rate limits, gives priority access during high-demand periods and allows expanded context windows. Like Free, it is a personal product: there is no central billing, no admin console and no organisational governance. A company whose employees are all on individual Pro subscriptions has no visibility into what those users are doing, cannot enforce a data policy and cannot bulk-provision or deprovision accounts. For any organisation with compliance requirements or more than a handful of users, Pro is an operational liability rather than a solution.
Team
Team is the first tier with an organisational billing layer. It is priced per seat and adds:
- Centralised billing — one invoice for all seats
- Admin console (limited) — manage who is in the workspace, invite or remove members
- Higher rate limits — typically 2× Pro limits
- Expanded context — access to longer context windows
- Training opt-out — conversations in the workspace are not used for model training by default
Team is appropriate for small to medium organisations (roughly 5–150 users) that need central billing and basic administration but do not have complex SSO, compliance or data sovereignty requirements.
Enterprise
Enterprise is a negotiated contract with Anthropic rather than a self-serve subscription. It adds everything Team includes and extends it significantly:
- SAML SSO — federate Claude authentication with your existing identity provider (Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, Ping Identity, etc.)
- SCIM provisioning — automate user creation and deactivation from your directory
- Expanded admin controls — more granular policy settings, audit logging, session management
- Custom data retention — configurable conversation retention periods aligned to your data governance policy
- Higher usage limits — negotiated limits that scale with your contract
- Dedicated support — named account manager and enterprise SLA for support tickets
- Custom contract terms — ability to negotiate DPA, BAA (for HIPAA) and other legal addenda
- Priority model access — typically first access to new Claude model versions
The decision to go Enterprise rather than Team usually comes down to one or more of: SSO requirement (most IT security policies mandate SSO for SaaS tools above a certain risk level), compliance obligation (HIPAA, SOC 2 audit requirements, GDPR DPA), scale (150+ users), or the need for contractual guarantees that Anthropic's standard ToS does not provide.
The procurement process
Step 1: Internal alignment
Before contacting Anthropic, align three internal stakeholders:
IT/Security — they will assess whether Claude's data handling meets your standards and whether SSO integration is feasible. Prepare to share Anthropic's Trust Centre documentation with them.
Legal/Compliance — they will review the Data Processing Addendum (DPA) and any sector-specific requirements. GDPR-regulated organisations will require a signed DPA. Healthcare organisations in the US will require a BAA if PHI could enter the system.
Finance/Procurement — they will need a vendor assessment and cost estimate. Enterprise pricing is negotiated based on seat count and contract length; typical ranges are USD 50–100 per user per month depending on scale.
Step 2: Contact Anthropic sales
Enterprise contracts are handled by Anthropic's sales team. Contact them via the enterprise enquiry form on anthropic.com. Expect a discovery call covering your use case, seat count, industry, compliance requirements and desired contract start date.
Step 3: Technical evaluation
Anthropic will typically grant a time-limited pilot for evaluation. Use this period to:
- Test SSO integration with your identity provider
- Validate that data handling settings meet your compliance requirements
- Pilot with a representative user group (10–20 people) across 2–3 use cases
- Document feedback that informs the final deployment plan
Step 4: Contract and onboarding
Once the contract is signed, Anthropic provisions your Enterprise organisation. You will receive:
- Admin console access for the designated super-admin
- Technical onboarding documentation
- A named account manager or customer success contact

| HIPAA BAA | — | ✓ |

| Negotiated SLA | — | ✓ |
Scenario: a financial services firm
A 600-person wealth management firm wants to deploy Claude to their research analysts and client-facing advisers. Their IT security policy mandates SSO for all SaaS tools rated above medium risk. Their compliance team requires a DPA aligned to UK GDPR. They are also under FCA supervision, which requires them to be able to demonstrate oversight of AI tools used in client-facing workflows.
Team does not provide SSO or a negotiable DPA. Enterprise is the only appropriate tier. The firm contacts Anthropic sales, completes a 30-day pilot with 15 analysts, and signs a 12-month contract with a DPA addendum before rolling out to 120 initial users.
Key takeaway
The tier decision is a governance and risk decision before it is a product decision. Match the tier to your compliance requirements and identity management posture, not just your seat count. For most organisations with IT security policies, an existing SSO infrastructure and any compliance obligation, Enterprise is the correct tier from day one.
